The Crown Prince adopts the development orientation of Darin Island and Tarut

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, – may God protect him – announced – based on the decision of the Council of Ministers – the adoption of the development orientation of Darin Island and Tarut and the future initiatives of the island, and the establishment of the Island Development Corporation Darren and Tarot.
The generous approval included the allocation of an estimated budget of 2.644 billion riyals. The Foundation aims to improve the quality of life and develop the local product, by taking advantage of the comparative advantages of the island in terms of heritage, environment and tourism. Contributing to achieving economic diversification.
The development orientation of the island, located on an area of ​​32 square kilometers and inhabited by 120,000 people, includes identifying the components and comparative and competitive advantages of the island according to three main pillars to chart the future of Darin and Tarut islands, namely: Preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the island. Revitalization of natural and environmental sites. Improving the quality of life and enhancing its tourism economy.
In order to achieve the objectives of the developmental orientation of the island, more than 19 qualitative initiatives have been developed. On the cultural side, Darien Castle and Airport will be developed as heritage tourist destinations, and several cultural and heritage festivals will be held on the island, in addition to the establishment of multiple pedestrian paths that permeate the heritage areas on the island. On the environmental side, the largest mangrove forest will be established. On the shores of the Arabian Gulf, and the establishment of a number of hotels and eco-lodges in natural areas, in addition to improving the quality of life on the island through the construction of roads, infrastructure and public parks, which include several playgrounds and modern sports facilities.
It is expected that the adoption of the development orientation will have a significant economic and social impact in the region by contributing to the gross domestic product at an average of 297 million riyals annually, increasing the number of tourists to 1.36 million tourists by 2030, and providing thousands of job opportunities in addition to allocating up to 48% of the island’s area is for squares, public parks, waterfronts, roads and facilities.
This comes as an extension of the keenness of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and His Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister – may God preserve them – that development include all cities and governorates based on the comparative advantages of each region, and His Highness directed to work on addressing all development obstacles in the island of Darin and Tarut, especially in the environmental and urban aspects, Providing job opportunities and creating jobs for the people of the region, and raising its contribution to the local product for the welfare of the citizen through the development of economic and tourism activities in it, and benefiting from the comparative advantages and investing in them.
It is worth noting the importance of the island historically, as it dates back more than 5,000 years, and includes more than 11 heritage sites. The port of Darien is one of the oldest ports in the region and was previously famous for being a seaport and an active market, as it was a storehouse for goods such as musk, perfumes, textiles and spices.
The approval of the adoption of the developmental orientation of Darin Island and Tarut and the establishment of the Darin and Tarut Development Corporation comes in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 in achieving a prosperous economy.
