Despite the lapses, the Senegalese coach renews confidence in Mendy

Aliou Cisse, coach of the Senegal national football team, trusts goalkeeper Edouard Mendy completely, despite his difficult start to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It can be said that Mendy, whom Sisi said was steel and would start in the second match in Group A against Qatar, made a mistake in his country’s 2-0 loss against the Netherlands.
“He plays roles very well and has steel will,” Sissi told reporters on Thursday.
He added, “Edwar’s capabilities speak for themselves. I do not think that anyone doubts him. Sometimes he has great levels and sometimes he retreats. He has my full confidence, my blind confidence, as well as the confidence of his colleagues, and tomorrow he will be on the field.”
It seemed that the Senegal match against the Netherlands was on its way to a draw until the 84th minute, when Frenkie de Jong sent a cross to the penalty area. Mendy went out to meet it, but he did not approach it and Cody Jakobo snatched it with his head to score the first goal for his country.
And in stoppage time, Mendy did not succeed in accurately blocking Memphis Depay’s shot, and the ball returned to Davy Claassen and he scored in the empty goal, to settle the victory for the Netherlands.
Senegalese defender Kalidou Coulibaly, Mendy’s team mate at Chelsea, said the reaction to the goalkeeper’s performance was exaggerated.
Coulibaly continued, “We play in the same club and we are brothers in Senegal. Edward is a very important player for us, and it is natural that we go through difficult stages. I think we are creating a crisis out of nothing.”
