South Korea’s first national football team scored a goal in fatal time to defeat Portugal 2-1 and qualify for the World Cup round of 16 with the European team, ahead of Uruguay on goal difference.
And in stoppage time, striker Son Heung-min swooped in from a corner kick for Portugal before slotting the ball to Hwang Hee-chan, who slotted it into the net, setting off frantic celebrations in the stands.
In his first appearance in the starting line-up, Ricardo Horta opened the scoring in the fifth minute, taking advantage of a cross from Diogo Dalot, while Kim Young-Gwon equalized with his goal in the 27th minute when a corner kick hit the back of Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, preparing for the player who put it in the net.
With this, South Korea qualifies as runner-up to Portugal to the next round at the expense of Uruguay, which won 2-0 over Ghana.
